Guest Bio: Judie Maxwell

Judith M. Maxwell is the Louise Rebecca Schawe and Williedell Schawe Professor of Linguistics & Anthropology at Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana.

She was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, and maintains even today a love for Tennessee sausage and Tennessee molasses.

Judie earned her two PhD’s in Linguistics and in Anthropology in 1982 from the University of Chicago. Her dissertation title was “How to talk to people who talk ‘funny’: the Chuj (Maya) Solution”.

She is a noted Mayanist, and her current interests include discourse analysis, language and power, and Native American languages. Judie works with the Tunica-Biloxi Language and Culture Revitalization Program, and teaches every Summer at the Mayan Language Institute: Intensive Kaqchikel or K’iche’ Language & Culture Program.
